I really liked this story. I wont summarize the book as others have already done so in their reviews. It was different from the regency romances that I normally read in that it involved a heroine that was several years older than the hero....8 to be exact. One of the main problems I frequently encounter when reading romance novellas is that the author tries to overcome too much in too short a time.....namely have people meet and fall in love in a matter of hours. However, this author was able to overcome that issue in this story. True, it was short, but the storyline encompassed a number of days and even though the heroine's previous husband had been an abusive, selfish bastard, the author was still able to have me convinced of the happily ever after for the couple by the end of the story. That is quite an achievement. Cameron is a wonderful hero. He saw what he wanted and he went after it....namely Clarisse. He was very patient and loving towards Clarisse who had been involved in a 14 year abusive marriage. I loved the way Cameron was finally able to break through Clarisse's reserves and get her to trust him. This book is part of a trilogy and has characters from some of the author's other books. But, it is easily read as a stand alone story.
Oh, the feels!!!
This book is a little novella that starts where Emerald ends. At the wedding of the Cainewoods, Cameron Leslie, Cait's cousin, meets Clarice Bradford, the widow we met in Book 1 who adopted Mary. It is practically love at first sight but will Clarice let herself enter marriage again?
SPOILER ALERT
This story was so beautiful! We knew Clarice was married before, but not that it was a domestic violence situation. Her late husband was a cruel man, 30 years her senior, who often hit her, assaulted her, and verbally abused her. Therefore, when Cameron offers her genuine love, she doesn't know what it is. I love how Cameron didn't pressure her and was willing to patiently wait so as not to frighten her. I literally almost cried during the handfasting scene! He didn't just marry Clarice but he adopted Mary and gave her his last name! There could not have been a better ending or Lady Leslie!
I loved this story, short but sweet and nicely written. Attraction or love at first sight, great but when it happens between a twentyfour year old man and a thirtytwo year woman who lives in a villege; has been nearly raped and had been married at a young age to an forty something year old man who actually raped her everytime he took her as well as beat her. No wonder it was hard for her to believe someone would love her and than have to deal with being afraid of being with him physically. To conquer those fears and get married within a week's time but Cameron Leslie did it. Would read again!
Forevermore is a novella that goes with the Jewel trilogy by Lauren Royal. It takes place in the Village of Cainewood, England in 1667. The characters are realistic and are well developed. Society is gathering at the Village for the marriage of Lord Cainewood and Lady Caithren Leslie of Scotland. With her is her cousin, Sir Cameron Leslie who just came into his title upon the death of Caithren’s brother. His title does not mean the same as Lord Cainewood’s does because Sir Leslie is from Scotland.
Clarice Bradford lives in the village with her daughter, Mary. Mary had been orphaned by the plague and the Great Fire of London. Lord Cainewood had rescued her from the fire and brought her to his village. Knowing Clarice and knowing she was widowed and without children, he left Mary there to be brought up as her child. Clarice was totally satisfied with her life in the village and her role as Mary’s mother.
Clarice had been invited to the wedding and dinner afterwards. She and Mary had dressed in their best and were brought to the castle in a carriage the Lord had sent for them. The first person they ran into was Cameron Leslie who was carrying Jewel, Lord Cainewood’s daughter. Cameron takes an immediate liking to Clarice and Mary and flirts with both until it was time for him to fulfill his duties to his cousin by escorting her to the wedding. Later that night, he flirts more openly with Clarice, only confusing her.
Cameron wants to take Clarice and Mary back to Scotland with him and marry her. Clarice backs down for some secret reason other than their age difference and that he lives in Scotland. She knows that if she tells Cameron he will drop her immediately; but she can’t go to Scotland without telling him. She is in a pretty bad place. Can she find her way out of the maze created?
