Emily Simon is a good listener. Maybe a little too good. As a professional counselor who's been unintentionally clocking hours after work with her advice-seeking friends, Emily decides it's time to hang up the counselor hat when she's out of the office and make something happen in her own life. She has just two rules No men with emotional baggage and no risk takers.

Bryan “Mac” McAvoy is tormented by the death of a teenage boy, shot during a robbery gone wrong, and fellow police officer, Sean Simon, is convinced his sister Emily is just the person to help Mac get back his edge.

With his dangerous vocation and giant suitcase full of guilt, Emily vows to steer clear and guard her heart. But when she receives a death threat from a deranged client, she finds that Mac may be the only man who can guard her life.

Solid 4.5 "Well, s**t! I wasn't expecting THAT" stars!

When I picked up this book, all I wanted was a fun, upbeat, mindless romance that wouldn't make me think or really feel much. Just something light and fluffy and fun. Welp, that wasn't what I got with "Talk To Me". Instead I got a rather deep, emotional and surprisingly amazing story! There are two main aspects of this book that run parallel which made it deeper than I was anticipating. Part romance and part mystery the two combined to intrigue me and hold my attention.

The romance aspect was ultimately what I came for and it didn't disappoint. It goes beyond a wounded cop and a young woman who doesn't want to risk getting involved with someone who has a risky profession. Both main characters have deep emotional scars that they have to overcome. Emily is dealing with a past trauma that involved her parents which damaged her emotionally. But she wasn't a stunted moron. She was actually damn strong and brave and overcame so many obstacles to get to where she is in her career at present. I loved her character's strength and even though she fought her feelings for the Hero (Mac) it was wholly understandable. Emily is another great heroine I found myself loving because she was a mix of traits I desire in a good female lead.

Mac McAvoy was another amazing book hero to add to my list of favorites. I'm not even really sure how to describe him because he was basically everything. Strong, sensitive, brave, courageous and protective without being overbearing. Mac's story really tugged at my heart strings because he finds himself on the wrong end of a gun when a young teenage boy decides to do something dangerous that leaves Mac with crippling guilt. With the details provided about his case, I kind of figured out the basics of the "Who, what and why's" behind the boy's motivation but it was still sad to witness.

The building relationship between these two characters was paced out slowly throughout the story but it never felt like it dragged or got stale. They both fight their attraction to each other and the chemistry between them is simply delicious. I loved how sweet, caring and patient she was with Mac. She was understanding and supportive, something Mac really needed. Likewise Mac had to overcome his aversion to relationships which was played up by the fact that he struggles with his guilt, making him feel unworthy of such love and affection. Mac and Emily had a great romance full of laughter and sweet moments that were also balanced out by the mystery aspect.

I love a good mystery and romantic suspense is one of my favorite sub genres so it caught me by surprise when "Talk To Me" started to veer into that realm. With Emily being a counselor she's had her fair share of "iffy" patients and when one of them threatens her life over a routine meeting, it adds an element of intensity not only to the story but also to the romance. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this element to the story overall though. The author set up enough backstory and threw in some extra pieces to the puzzle in order to throw off the reader but I can't say it was *gasp* worthy. I sort of felt like it was out of left field despite looking back and thinking "Ohhh yeahhh. I guess that works". Who I had pegged as the problematic threat to Emily wasn't who it turned out to be and while it wasn't quite as "enthralling" as some Romantic Suspense novels I've read, it wasn't entirely unwarranted. I can say, it did get the job done of moving the story into another deep area that only benefited Emily and Mac's romance so it wasn't a total "WTF" moment. Some people might roll their eyes but I was already so invested in the romance between these two that I just let it roll off my back.

In closing, I'd have to say the romance was the best part of the book. The mystery element was a take it or leave it kind of deal but it didn't hinder my reading progress ultimately, so I consider this a win for me. I had never read anything by this author before but I loved her writing style and character building/chemistry skills. I'm hoping this wasn't a "One hit wonder" experience because I'm hopeful for her next book in this series which I have no clue about yet. I'd recommend this one to anyone looking to forgo the angst and overly done drama. If you want a good "Rainy Day" read or just something to get lost in, then this might just be the perfect book for that occasion.

Talk to Me Protector Series Book 1 edition by Stephanie Reid Romance eBooks Reviews

When he thought people were in danger Officer Bryan McAvoy didn't hesitate to draw his weapon and let his training kick in. A year later, Bryan, or Mac, is still trying to deal with the ramifications of his actions all those days ago. His partner, Sean Simon, wants to make sure that Mac's head is in the game, so he asks his sister, Emily to counsel Mac.

After realizing that she spends both her professional and personal time listening and counseling others, Emily has decided she needs to focus on herself and is not on board with Sean's plan. The best laid plans are paved with good intentions though and Emily finds herself drawn to Mac, wanting nothing more than to be there for him, in whatever way possible. And while Mac finds himself drawn to Emily, he simply can't let himself fall for her. Timing is everything, and when Emily's life is threaten, nerves are frayed and emotions coming bubbling up to the surface.

I thought this was a great debut novel for Stephanie Reid, and while it lacked a lot of the steamier scenes I usually gravitate towards, this was still a very sweet love story. My only complaint is that I wish there would've been an epilogue with a little more of Mac & Emily's happily ever after.
This is a new author for me. Unfortunately the cover usually is what catches my eye then I read the description. This cover is...eh so so. I've actually had this in my downloaded list for about a month. (I do have a point folks, stay with me). I've finally read my list and got to this one once again so I figured I'd read it to get it out of there. Didn't even remember what it was about. Boy I could put it down. It kept my attention so much so that I was reading it on my phone in the car during red lights (not safe I know) & waiting in line at the store. Any spare minute I spent reading it. The characters were wonderful. I could picture Mac so easily. Sexy guy. Sean "the brother" reminded me of how brother acts. Emily was a great counselor without being stiff. She felt real and just a very caring person. I liked how she read patients body language too.

Great job Reid! Keep it up. Downloaded the next book. Spice up those covers!
It's been a while since I've discovered a new (to me) author I know, within the first few chapters, I'll end up reading whatever other books he/she has written.
I've already fallen for Ms. Reid's style and characterizations.
The main characters in this book are both tentative in their approach, because of their own hang-ups. Each has chosen to narrow their views on a future, for very understandable reasons. However, it would appear karma would like a say in that. There is so much connective tissue between the protagonists that despite each of their efforts, their paths continue to cross.
You'll find no childish emotional games, or adolescent antics in this book. Both Mac and Emily come across as mature adults, who simply struggle.
It's refreshing! And I'm about to dive into book two.
Highly recommended for those who can stand some mild heat and are not afraid of tackling some grown up issues.

There are only few whose books I don't think twice about one-clicking and Stephanie Reid has been decisively added to that short list.
